Winning Phase (the search  for action):
wins enhance the individual's self-image and ego.  Losses are rationalized as bad luck.  The gambler daydreams about to escape reality and dedicates more time toward activities.

Losing Phase (the chase):
As losses increase and self-esteem is jeopardized, the gambler will borrow money to get even and continue to bet.  Lies to family and friends escalate, and the missing of school, work, or social events are precluded due to activities.

Desperation Phase (rock bottom):
Desperation occurs as the gambler becomes obsess with getting even to cover money lost through .  The gambler can experience sever mood swings, fail in school and /or commit crimes such as selling drugs, shoplifting, stealing from parents, insurance and bank fraud or embezzling from employer to get money to gamble.

To the compulsive gambler, seems to offer a solution to some of life's most pressing problems; insufficient money, little prestige or self-esteem, feelings of boredom or failure, hopelessness and defeat.
